MADE | NOUS took Canadians on an unforgettable cross-country road trip with broadcasting legend George Stroumboulopoulos. From Vancouver to Toronto, over three warm summer months, we journeyed across this vast country with George, meeting people in communities from coast to coast to coast and asking one simple but powerful question:
What Canadian film and television MADE you?
What Canadian film and television MADE you?
What We Discovered
What we discovered was extraordinary. Across 14 cities, we conducted more than 50 in-depth conversations and over 100 street interviews in both official languages. We sat down with everyday Canadians and national icons alike—Chris Hadfield, Mark Carney, Ryan Reynolds, Jessie Reyez, Emily Hampshire, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Jay Baruchel, Tantoo Cardinal, Atom Egoyan, Rob Baker from The Tragically Hip, Stanley Cup winner Sam Reinhart, and dozens more.
Our French-language team had a major part to play in telling the stories of French-speaking Canada. Lead by comedian Rosalie Vaillancourt, with their own itinerary but the same shared goal, this team played an important role in showing us there is much more to learn about Canadian storytelling in our French-speaking provinces than we can possibly imagine.
Across the board, we met people and listened to them open up about the films and TV shows that shaped their identities, strengthened their communities, and deepened their sense of belonging, both at home and abroad.
But this journey uncovered something even deeper: the connecting threads that give us our unique identity as a country. Through every conversation, we found shared values and principles that distinguish us from other places in the world—compassion, resilience, humour in the face of hardship, and a quiet but fierce pride in who we are. We set out to explore how these qualities have emerged and been reflected through our media, and what we found was a portrait of Canada that’s both surprising and deeply moving.
Our cameras rolled through Vancouver (BC), Edmonton and Calgary (AB), Montreal (QC), Saint John and Moncton (NB), Prince Edward Island, Nunavut and so many other communities along the way. This has been one of those rare projects that reminds you why you do this work in the first place.
None of this would have been possible without our incredible production and post pro teams. Starting with George, our production team were the face of our interactions on the road, building bridges in every community we visited and making people feel comfortable sharing their stories with us. This particularly goes for our French language and the Reelworld production team who connected with the English language team along the way – while capturing many stories of their own. These three teams impressed every step of the way and fostered an environment of trust and professionalism that gave us the access we needed for a project of this scale.
We got to witness people light up talking about the stories that shaped them, and sharing in this has changed us too. Episodes from this series will be released steadily from November through February, and we’re genuinely excited to share what we discovered with audiences across the country. These aren’t just stories about film and television—they’re stories about who we are, where we come from, and what connects us. We think you’re going to love them as much as we do.
