The work of director Mads K. Baekkevold is nothing if not eclectic, often operating at the opposite ends of a spectrum. On one side – poppy, bright, and cheerful. On the other – offbeat, bizarre, and eccentric. His international background and extensive experience contributes to this rich, sometimes contradictory melange: originally from Norway, he has also lived and worked in Singapore, Amsterdam, and now Vancouver.
Mads has created content for clients such as Netflix, Universal Studios, Samsung, IBM, L’Oréal, MasterCard, Nikon, Discovery Channel, and many more. He has two Cannes Lions awards and a Clio for his TV commercial work, and an array of oddly-shaped trophies for his spooky little short films.
Mads is now taking the leap into the long-form feature space: his directorial debut documentary The Chef & The Daruma had its premiere at VIFF, where it won the Insights Audience Award. He is also deep in creative development on a smörgåsbord of other stuff – scripted horror projects, more documentaries, a streaming series, you name it. In the future, he wants to make movies about giant sea creatures.
